I was always a small guy and would get dished a lot of crap for being small. Eventually I had enough and decided I was going to get into the gym and do something about it.

Due to my genetics, natural lifting alone wasn’t enough to put some weight on so decided I needed something a little more.

I’ve gone through a decent list of products that I’ve researched or tried while looking for the best muscle growth supplement. Some of my experiments were with: creatine, whey protein, as well as other more natural products.

In the end one type of natural growth supplement seemed to be the answer – Insulin-like Growth Factors (IGFs). My top product in this field of supplement type: BioAntler.

Well based on my criteria I set out to find the best supplements to build muscle, BioAntler met all on them.

What I Liked About BioAntler

BioAntler is a supplement derived from the natural proteins and IGFs found in deer antler velvet extract. Deer antler extracts have varying degrees of potency depending on when they were harvested.

BioAntler obtains their extracts from New Zealand which is another reason why it ranks #1 on my list as the best supplement to build muscle. New Zealand has solid regulations on the industry and any extraction performed there is done humanely. Something I agree with completely.

Additionally BioAntler mixes IGF-1 with L-Arginine and other plant extracts. This provides for a more holistic supplement than what other deer antler extracts may provide.

IGF-1 – A natural anabolic hormone that stimulates muscle tissue growth and maximizes protein synthesis. Not only is IGF-1 good for body building but studies reveal a decline in IGF-1 levels is among the causes of bone disorder development.

L-Arginine – An amino acid necessary for the body to make proteins. L-arginine can be found in red meat, fish, poultry, and dairy products. There are also synthetic versions available that are made in a laboratory and used as medicine.

Plant Extracts – Many supplements use a variety of plant extracts to provide powerful nutrients from natural sources. One of the key plant extracts in BioAntler is Tongkat Ali root extract, this is the natural testosterone hormone that is combined with the IGF packed velvet extract. Another ingredient used is Stevia leaf which is a natural energy booster. You may actually notice stevia leaf from seeing it in the grocery store in the coffee isle. I’m actually surprised that more supplement products don’t offer this money back guarantee since everyone’s body reacts differently and in my mind having this opportunity if it doesn’t work is a major selling point in a product. It puts me in the whole “no-risk” involved mindset.

What I Don’t Care For

Nothing is 100% great at everything so I have to also share what isn’t that great about BioAntler.

The taste of the spray isn’t the best to be honest. Multiple people have said if this supplement could somehow be made to taste like cotton candy that this would be the best of the best deer velvet extracts.

Unfortunately that’s not the case but if you can put up with a little bitter flavor for a few seconds then I think you’ll be fine.

Something else you can do to counter this is throw an Altoid on top of your tongue while you spray the extract under it, this will help combat the taste and get you on with your lift.

Another deer extract, Deer Antler Plus comes in a pill form however isn’t as effective since the stomach acids break down much of the proteins before they can be absorbed directly into the blood stream. As a result of this, toughing through the spray does generate better results.

Overall, whether you’re looking to gain mass or trim your body up and tone out, BioAntler combined with various workouts routines will help you accomplish that.

To break down the various mass gaining supplements we’ll take a quick look at the most common products on the market that lifters are using to bulk up.

Testosterone Boosters

These are natural supplements that increase the body’s ability to produce testosterone levels within the blood stream.

Most testosterone boosters are made with Tribulus, which is a plant based substance that enhances testosterone levels. These boosters spike up energy levels and improve mass building.

Though this sounds great, the unfortunate thing about testosterone boosters is their occasional side effects though:

  • Sleep apnea
  • Increased aggression levels
  • Enlargement of the breasts
  • Shrinkage of the testes
  • A few other side effects

Something to keep in mind if you plan to use testosterone boosters is whether they are synthetic or natural. If you are set on using boosters go for the ones created with natural substances.

Growth Hormones

Also known as Human Growth Hormones (HGH).  Natural HGH are produced in the pituitary gland and regulate growth spurs. Aside from the effects is has on regulating body fluids, bone growth, and metabolism, bodybuilders use it for body composition.

The supplements you’d buy from a store are synthetic HGH and as powerful as they are, they are an even greater risk to your body than the testosterone boosters are, something that definitely doesn’t fit my criteria of good mass gaining supplements.

From my research the major side effects are:

  • Acromegaly (causes protrusion facial features and jaw bone)
  • Depression
  • Hair loss
  • Liver & thyroid damage
  • Enlargement of breasts
  • Many others

HGH are actually mass gaining supplements that I’d strongly suggest avoiding. However I’m not a doctor and none of my advise is professional so it’s all your own risk what you decide to do!


Ahh the well known creatine. If you lift I’m sure you have taken it one time or another.

Creatine is a compound within the body that produces energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Natural creatine is made in the liver with 95% of it stored in skeletal muscles with the remaining 5% in the brain, testes, and heart.

Creatine is effective at reducing lactic acid which decreases muscle fatigue. Luckily, there aren’t really any harsh side effects with creatine either:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Cramps

Some are very happy using creatine, I personally didn’t like it because I felt that the results I saw from it weren’t long lasting. My arms seemed to bulk up during the lifts but immediately upon finishing my workouts would shrink back to their normal size.

I want something with long lasting effects.

Whey Protein

Whey protein is a natural source of protein generated from the watery portion of milk that separates from the curds during the cheese making process.

Whey is a more natural product than some of the others I pointed out earlier in my list therefore I’m not against it. I actually mix a little whey protein into my shakes every now and then before work outs to increase my nutrient intake.

Since it’s a natural substance it will aid your body in increasing proteins needed to build muscle, however relying solely on it to gain bulk may take a longer duration of time. If you’re ok with that then by all means go for it.

I think whey is a good supplemental product to your primary mass gaining supplements however, I don’t think you should rely solely on the whey to bulk up fast.

There aren’t any safety concerns or side affects known with whey unless you are allergic to cow’s milk.

Insulin-Like Growth Factors

Ahh best for last. Insulin-like Growth Factors (IGF, IGF-1 or IGF-2) like Bioantler or Deer Antler Plus increase lean body mass, build bone, muscle, and nerves by assisting in glucose metabolism.

They are protein hormones, produced in the liver (in humans) that are very similar to insulin and assist in muscle growth. IGFs can be found in deer velvet extract as well, which is marketed as one of the top mass gaining supplements.

CNBC had a report stating:

A small study claims weightlifters who used the supplement for 10 weeks had some measurable strength gains when compared with weightlifters who were given a placebo.

Some still question the validity of the report though just as they do with any new and unconventional diet product.

When used properly (no excessive use/dosage) IGFs appear to be safe for men. There are some slight concerns however for women:

  • Not recommended for women who are pregnant
  • If you have a condition that is made worse by exposure to estrogen then I wouldn’t recommend it

Overall, from various research around the web, IGFs appear to have the best outcomes with the most limited side effects of the supplements on my list.

Keep in mind that if you strongly believe in the mass gaining supplements you’re using now don’t let me sway your mind.
